What REN say:
Clean Screen Mineral SPF30 is a “Mattifying face sunscreen with Broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection, blue light protection, non-nano technology, vegan and made with naturally derived ingredients.” REN Skincare
What is it?
•Subtle for sensitive skin
•Cruelty-Free- Leaping Bunny certified
It is an emollient cream that is soothing and hydrating but not greasy or suffocating as many SPF’s can be. The fragrance makes it feel like the application is one that is a luxury spa experience, rather than a necessary slugging on of a sunblock.
The cream applies easily. There is no pilling or tugging, it simply blends well into the skin as a regular moisturiser does.
Does it have a white cast?
On myself and my Mum (fair and tanned white skin tones), this does leave a slight white cast upon first application. However, this disappears within a minute or so.
Value for money?
For £30.00 for 50ml, it is comparable to others of this type on the market such as SkinCeuticals Sheer Mineral Defence UV Defence which is £37.00 for 50ml.
This is a mattifying formula, which is pleasant in a sunblock. REN use rice extract in order to achieve this. However just because it is mattifying does not mean that it has a completely ‘dulling’ effect to the skin, as can sometimes happen with more matte formulations. In fact, somehow the Clean Screen SPF30 creates quite a beautifying glow to the skin without being dewy, tacky and greasy. Especially common in mineral SPF.
Being an oily skinned gal I can find some of the heavier sun care products too much to bare so tend to look for formula’s which promise to mattify my skin. REN’S Clean Screen SPF30 does not disappoint. My skin is instantly mattified upon application and this stays throughout the day, particularly in the t-zone area where I am most prone to shine. At the same time, my skin has a lovely luminosity to it and feels hydrated.
To gain a broader picture I asked my Mum to also try the sunblock out. With a more mature and drier skin type than mine, I thought it would be an interesting comparison.
She found the Clean Screen SPF30 to be very comfortable to wear and adequately hydrating for her dry skin. A particular positive is the non-greasy formula.
As I first applied this my mind darted trying to place what the fragrance reminded me of, then it hit me; 8 Hour Cream by Elizabeth Arden. A beautifully herby scent, blended with a slight freshness of citrus. It’s not overpowering but it is there. It is a grown up scent which is pleasant as applied and fades after.
Planet Friendly packaging
It’s pretty, it’s bright and yellow just like the sun and of course, opaque to protect the goods but here’s the important bit. REN is, in my opinion, one of the market leaders in skincare with their sustainability, recycling ethos and practice.
“We’ve used 50% recycled plastic to create our tube – the maximum we can while protecting the formula, and 100% recycled plastic for the cap. Plus being a one-type plastic, it’s designed to be recycled all over again. Keep up the clean work.” Ren Skincare
Pretty cool eh?
I’m an avid supporter of this brand because of this, of course, it helps that their products are great too 😉

•Folks with sensitive skin
Who won’t like it?
•Chemical/Organic only SPF fans
•Those who prefer fragrance free skin care
REN Clean Screen Mineral SPF30 is a pleasant mineral sunblock. It is non-greasy, doesn’t pill under makeup and is very mattifying. The SPF doesn’t cause any stinging to my eyes or any irritation to the more sensitive areas of my face. It almost feels like a mattifying primer for your makeup base which is an added bonus. Those on the normal to oily side on the skin type scale will appreciate this. While leaving a matte appearance it doesn’t skip on hydration. Skin feels efficiently hydrated when wearing this thanks to the moisturising ingredients glycerin and hydrating alcohols (non-irritating, sensitising or drying alcohols). Makeup applies well on top, there is no change in application necessary.
The product itself is a purely mineral/inorganic based SPF using zinc oxide as it’s broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection. It is antioxidant rich giving extra protection against damaging free radicals. Aloe Vera and rice flour extract make it soothing for those with sensitive skin.
REN Clean Mineral SPF30 is a suncare product I am happy to wear daily. I like that it is SPF30 (I believe we shouldn’t wear anything lower on our faces, particularly if using actives in our skincare routine) and that it offers blue screen protection also given how much time we spend in front of screens these days.
Being a cruelty-free brand, a vegan-friendly (also silicone free) formula, mineral based and mattifying, it is an SPF which caters to many needs and is, therefore, suitable for a wide range of people.
